Proverbs 16
Psalm 27:13
“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9
At different points in life, you may begin with great expectations and hopeful dreams for the future. There may even be seasons when everything seems to fall into place — progress is steady, doors are opening, and it feels as though nothing could slow you down.
Then suddenly, things change.
What once felt like forward momentum now feels like setback after setback. Instead of advancing, it seems as though every step you take leads backward. This experience is not unfamiliar to Scripture — in fact, it mirrors the journey of David.
After being anointed by the prophet Samuel as the future king of Israel, David’s life appeared to be moving rapidly toward fulfillment. He served King Saul, defeated Goliath, married into the royal family, and earned the admiration of the nation. Everything suggested he was on a direct path to the throne.
But in a single moment, everything shifted.
Saul’s jealousy turned deadly, and David was forced to flee. The promise of kingship gave way to years of hardship, rejection, and danger. From a human perspective, it looked like David’s life was unraveling. Yet God was not delaying His promise — He was preparing David to fulfill it.
The same is often true for us.
When life feels like it’s moving backward, it does not mean God has abandoned His plan. Sometimes, what feels like regression is actually divine preparation. God may be using difficult seasons to strengthen your faith, shape your character, and train you for what lies ahead.
If you find yourself discouraged today, remember this: God is not finished with you. He is still directing your steps, even when the path feels unclear. Like David, you will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living — but often only after learning to trust Him in the waiting.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for working in my life even when I don’t understand the process. Help me trust that You are preparing me for what lies ahead. I place my steps in Your hands. Amen.
